In my excessive boredom, I’ve decided it’s time for a hobby. After a bit of brainstorming and sampling different kinds (piano, shopping, movie watching, eating) I’ve landed on programming! Well, it actually started as hacking (different from cracking, mind you). I’m a very logical person who likes to tackle problems, particularly with computers. Not to mention, I can think of a million and one programs I wish existed. So, hey, I’ll just build them! I’m not aiming to be a master or work in the field, this will just be a few side projects. Something to do when bored.
That said, there is not shortage of determination here. If you’ve met me in person, you know that well. To get my programming hat to fit right, I’ll be picking up “What’s the Name of This Book?” I fear the left-side of my brain is probably a tad dusty from all the artwork I do. Thankfully, math and problem solving were my fortes in school. I’m not going to lie, I hope I’m slightly a natural at this, as it will make it that much easier. Who knows, maybe I fall in love with it. More on that later.
New hobby aside, being a girl who is moving away for a year is a difficult thing. As in, what am I going to pack?! It’s hard to imagine a whole year away from my wardrobe. Until recently, I’ve had a great excuse to go shopping so I may have something to wear at work in Japan. Sadly, I have acquired everything I needed. Now when I go to the mall, I can’t justify buying anything else. I know, I lead such a sad life. The lack of money isn’t helping either. Programming is a (relatively) free hobby. That will be nice.
In an effort to consume all my favorite Floridian restaurants until I am sick of them, I went to 4Rivers no less than 10 times this month. Yup. I’m not that thrilled about it anymore. Of course, their sweets side is a different story. I don’t think I’ll ever get tired of that. I’ve also been trying to eat a ton of Chik-Fil-A breakfast biscuits. They are so amazing when you put honey on them, I swear! If you happen to see me out, munching on one of the aforementioned delicacies, please remind me to go for a run later that day. Thank you. If I throw you a look, I don’t mean it. All this good food is going to my thighs, they are mostly compromised of ice cream and cookies nowadays. It’s terrible and fantastic at the same time. I’ve got it into my head that I will loose weight in Japan. With any luck I will have a 30 minute walk every day. Any cardio is good cardio.
Sorry for the lack of pictures this post!
The nonsense of packing cookies and ice cream on your thighs so you can “unpack” them by walking in Japan makes perfect sense.
I could make two suggestions for you in regards to programming.
1. If you have no programming experience at all I would suggest:
Python The Hard Way: http://learnpythonthehardway.org/
2. If you have previous programming experience I would suggest:
Dive in to Python: http://www.diveintopython.net/
Hope that helps. Happy hacking…
Thank you for the resources! I have been having a lot of fun with it so far!
